Casey had never been ashamed for being gay, his grandma had always encouraged him to go his own way. But today it felt different. For the first time he had a boyfriend, and after all what had happened yesterday probably everyone in the hospital would knew about it. He was nervous when he entered the ward. But the nurse smiled at him like she had done before. And no one else paid attention to him.
He relaxed even more when Zeke told him grinning what had happened this morning.
"There was this student nurse," he said.
"You could tell, she was curious as hell. Somehow cute. I couldn't help it to tease her a bit. She became deep red first but then she told me, she wishes her friend would care so much about her like you do to me."
"It's great how easily you can handle this. I would never have expected that you can be so open with it!"
"You think it's embarrassing to be gay?"
"No, of course not. I'm just not used to it that other people know about it."
Zeke pulled him over to sit onto his bedside.
"I'm not used to have a boyfriend, but it feels great. And I'm not gonna hide you!"
It went even better over the next days. Zeke was more and more back to his old self. Casey chuckled when he found him flirting and laughing with one of the elderly nurses.
"Oh, sorry to interrupt you," he said.
Zeke's smile widened. Then he turned back to the nurse.
"Could you do me a favor? What about coffee? I mean, a real one, not this hospital shit. Think you can do this for me? A coffee with extra cream. Please?"
"I'll see what I can do, honey," she laughed.
"Will be back in a minute!"
"Should I be jealous," Casey asked.
Zeke pulled him into his arms for a kiss.
"Just to kill the time," he said.
"It's boring as hell when you're not around. So, where are my Muffins?"
"Here, you demanding prick," Casey chuckled.
Zeke opened the box Casey had put onto the table and smacked his lips.
"Hmmm, god, I've missed this. You are the best cook ever."
The nurse came back with the promised coffee, two mugs, one for him and one for Casey. Zeke grinned.
"You are a life-saver, Mary-Ann!"
"Yeah, sure," she chuckled.
"Have fun, boys. But remember, this is still a hospital!"
For the next few minutes Zeke was just enjoying his coffee and his muffin while Casey told him about his morning.
"I was going to this hotel Mr. Billings told me about. It's just a small one but mostly fully booked."
His eyes sparkled excited.
"The chef is nice. It will be fun to work there. Though I'm a bit nervous about it. So much will be new for me."
"You're gonna learn," Zeke reassured him.
"You know, you can do this! So, when do you start?"
Casey decided not to tell him that Mr. Dauson, the chef, had asked him if he could start next monday.
"I know, you want to go back to school after summer," he had said.
"That's a good decision and we're gonna support you with it. But there are still some more weeks till then. I would like you to start as soon as possible. It will make it easier when you can work full time in the beginning, just to catch up with the basics."
Casey knew, Zeke would call him 'a stupid shit' when he told him that he did say 'sorry, I can't'. He hadn't thought about it what this could mean for him and his dream-job, all what he knew was that Zeke needed him and that a full-time-job would restrict their time into almost nothing. Mr. Dauson had looked surprised, but when Casey tried to explain the situation he had been understanding.
"I can start in September," Casey told Zeke.
"This gives me two weeks to become more familiar with everything before school starts!"
"That sounds good," Zeke said.
"And did you ... did you ask him about the apartment?"
Casey hesitated. He didn't want to think about leaving the garage ... leaving Zeke. Even if they would still be in the same town. It felt as if he would leave him alone when he needed him most.
"There are some rooms for employees in the basement, yeah. But ... the hotel ... it's just about a mile away from the garage. I guess, I could stay ... if you want me to ..."
"Casey ... don't!
Zeke took a deep breath, his eyes dark and thoughtful now.
"When I'm leaving the hospital I will look for a job. I will look for a cheap apartment. And I will clean out the garage. That's it. And I don't wanna talk about it because there is nothing to talk about."
Casey sighed, feeling depressed now. But he knew, all he could do was to accept Zeke's decision.
