His voice sounded harsh, he tried to avoid Debbee's eyes. Her silence told more than enough. And as always when he felt helplessly forced into a corner, he attacked.
"What? It's all his damned fault, right? I was not asking him to sticking his nose into my life. I've had everything under control!"
"So? Well, it didn't look like this! I would say, you were caught in a great mess once again!"
"You haven't the faintest idea, Debs, okay?"
Zeke threw a killing glance at her.
"Everything was alright, I can tell you, before he fucked it up. What an idiot! I have always warned him about it. But no, he needed to play the hero and ..."
"Shut up, Zeke!"
Debbee somehow managed to keep her voice calm, though her eyes were sparkling menacing.
"You better shut up now! Don't act like a damned prick. Casey is none of your stupid fuckbuddies, you know. He was worried sick.
This is not just about you, Zeke! The whole issue has consequences for him too. His Dad doesn't know how to cope with it. His art prof has kicked him out of his course. But he doesn't complain. He doesn't blame you. Do you know why, Zeke? Because he really cares for you. He couldn't just close his eyes and wait it out!"
Zeke slumped back deeper into the couch. All his anger seemed to be used up in just a second.
"How do you know all that?"
Debbee hesitated for a moment.
"He has told me," she finally confessed.
"Last Monday! Our training sessions, remember?"
Zeke blinked surprised.
"He was here? In Columbus?"
"No! He's called to cancel. He says, he doesn't want to come between us. Because you need a friend more than he does."
Zeke bit his lip and stared at her, feeling cold.
"Why the hell is he doing this, Debs? Can you tell me?"
"What is he doing?"
"He's always there for me. No matter what I do, he always backs me up. Why does he do this? He should better think more about himself. He should move on ... without me!"
"Oh Zeke, just face it! There are people, who really care about you!"
"Yeah. Maybe you... or Eric... that's okay. I don't need to put anything over on you. But Casey ... Casey is someone special. I don't want to hurt him, y'know? But I do! I can never give him what he really wants!"
Zeke bent forward and stubbed out his cigarette, only to light a new one right away. Debbee kept quiet until he was ready to talk again.
"You know me, Debs. I need to do everything in my way and I can't stand too much nearness. But he deserves this. Someone who is ready to stand by his side openly anytime."
Debbee smiled slightly.
"It's always a risk to let someone into your life, Zeke, but maybe he's worth a try! If you ask me: He is the very best what has ever happened in your life ... and it's pretty stupid to let him go."
"Don't say this, Debs," Zeke groaned, rubbing his eyes.
"I've tried, y'know? I've tried so hard. It feels so good, being together with him. And when he told me that he probably will go to Ohio States after graduation ... for a moment I just was happy. I so wanted to believe that there is a chance for us ...
But then: boom. My life is so fucked up, Debs. And I've no right to drag him into all this. See what I do to him. He is lying for me. He is coming out for me. All the trouble with his parents ... Mr. Brown ... all ..."
"Wait, Zeke! Wait a sec!"
Debbee looked at him thoughtfully.
"What do you mean: he is lying for you? Did he ... this story about drugselling and shit ... is it true? I mean, did he lie to protect you?"
"What? Do you really believe, I would let him do this," Zeke hissed.
"Oh, fuck you, Debs!"
She let out a deep breath, obviously relieved.
"Okay. I get it: this is a 'No!' So, he told the truth and he was together with you this afternoon. But ... this is not all, isn't it? What's actually happened, Zeke? This call to the police ... what was this about?"
"I guess, you can call it a kind of farewell gift!"
Debbee stared at him bewildered.
