It had been Zeke's idea to stop at the little diner offside the highway. It wasn't much going on and they took place at a table in a corner, nearby the window.
"We don't have to do this, Zeke. I get it," Casey had murmured.
Zeke had just shrugged.
"Naw, it's okay. Usually no one from Herrington is coming here. That's why I like it!"
He didn't want to go back yet. He didn't want to hide again in the garage. He just wanted a small bit of normality at least for the moment.
"So, what do you think about all this?"
Casey rolled his eyes, but smiled slightly.
"Debbee is nice!"
"Yes, she is not bad!"
Casey frowned and looked at him curious. Zeke grinned.
"Not bad? This is all?"
"Sure. Something wrong with it?"
"Yeah! You and Debbee... this is ... I don't know! Somehow special! There is something going on between you."
"I don't know. It's the way you talk to her. Your flirting with her. It's different from your behavior at school. She means something for you!"
Zeke looked at him thoughtfully before he nodded.
"She means a lot! There aren't many people around I trust like her. Believe me, she could tell you everything you want to know about me. But she wouldn't!"
"Yes, I understand!"
Zeke could feel what was going on in his head.
"This has nothing to do with you," he said reassuring.
"I trust you, more than I can say. But Debbee ... we know each other over three years now. She has saved my ass more than once. Sometimes we don't see us for weeks, but it doesn't matter at all. When I need her, she will be there ...
It's hard to explain. Our relationship is not always quite easy!"
Casey kept quiet for a moment. He was not sure what to think about this. A part of him felt a bit jealous, though he knew, he didn't need to be.
"Yeah, she's mentioned this," he murmured.
Zeke raised his eyebrows.
"She told you what?"
"That it was difficult between you two first, because you act like a dickhead!"
"She did? That's the understatement of the century. She is so fucking hot when she's mad at you!"
Zeke grinned at Casey's doubtful gaze.
"Believe me, she is! But you better don't tempt the fate. Because she won't take any shit!"
"I'll buy that! Sounds interesting, you two together. But after all it did work out well, right?"
"Not like planned. It was in a club in Columbus. This evening the first I noticed was her laughter. And I wanted her. I always got what I wanted, you know. But Debs ... she was different. She didn't even tell me 'no, thanks'. She just ignored me!"
"Must have been hard for your ego!"
"More than this. Hey, I was seventeen and actually I wasn't allowed to be in clubs. But I was there every weekend and I could get every girl I wanted. I was not used to be overlooked. I put on my most seductive smile. I started to flirt with any other bitch around her. They all made goo-goo eyes ... but Debbee? Nothing! She didn't even look at me.
But then, out of the blue, she stood up and she smiled at me and she left. All I could think, was: 'Yessss, that's it, baby!'
And I followed her to the parking lot. She was standing beside the GTO, don't ask me how she did know. I sneaked up from behind and I put me arms around her ... The next I remember: She was over me and pinned me down onto the ground. I didn't have the slightest chance to fend her off ..."
Casey narrowed his eyes.
"Oh, this again! Nice try, Zeke!"
"Do you think, you can convince me to give it a try with shit like that? You can do better, Zeke!"
Zeke smirked. Then he reached into his pocket and put his handy onto the table in front of Casey.
"Go ahead. Call her. Maybe you'll believe her more than me!"
"This cannot be, Zeke! Debbee is ... she is ... and you ... "
"Debs knew what she was doing. Because she is good and you should never underestimate her. I was stupid enough to do. I felt like the king of the world and I was sure no girl could resist my charm. Debbee ... she brought me back down to earth."
Casey winked and tried to sort the pictures in his mind. Debbee ... yes, he had felt the strength inside her, although she looked so small and frail ... he could fancy her becoming furious ... maybe it was possible that she had caught Zeke totally off guard this evening. Maybe she had brought him back in line ... But what was between them today? Zeke was laughing with her, trusting her, flirting with her. If his story was true it didn't make any sense that they were so close ...
Zeke seemed to sense his feelings. He shook his head.
"I couldn't be mad at her for long. Debs is ... just Debs, y'know. She is always straightforward and tells you what she thinks. But even if you do things she doesn't like, she will never run you down.
She was fucking fair this evening. She could have gone back, right? Into the club. Bragging around. Made me looking silly. Instead of this she pulled me up and grinned. 'C'mon, let's get the hell out of here!' was all she said.
This was not what Casey had expected.
"There was no 'oh'. It's never happened anything between us. I mean, everyone assumed it - and Debbee left them thinking. Till now no one has got to know what really happened this evening. It's just me and Debs ... and now: you!"
"There was no reason to tell me," he murmured.
"Yeah! In a way you remind me on her, y'know? You always let me say shit I don't wanna talk about at all!"
Finally they were back in "their" garage. Time was running late. Casey knew he should already be on this way back home. But he didn't want to go. So much had happened this afternoon. He had learned a lot ... about himself, about Zeke, about their relationship. Today at school it had felt like the end. Now it seemed to be a beginning. The beginning of what ... he couldn't actually tell ...
He groaned when Zeke tried to pull him into another deep kiss.
"Zeke, please ... we can't ..."
"I don't let you go! I was so scared ..."
Casey couldn't resist. Just one more kiss. He was already late for dinner, his mom would be already mad at him, so it didn't matter at all. Just one more kiss ...
" ... so scared, that I'd fucked it up. God, I missed you ..."
When Zeke's hand started to grope around, Casey pulled back.
"Zeke, stop it. I need to go now, really! But ... I gonna come back tomorrow. I ... urg ... oh Zeke, please! I'm gonna do whatever you want me to do, okay? To .. tomorrow!"
Zeke finally let him go. He narrowed his eyes.
"Whatever I want?"
Shit! Casey knew he was blushing once again. After all what had already happened between them, Zeke could still do this with him, just with his eyes, his voice, his smile. He put on his most defiant look.
Zeke chuckled mischievous.
