"What the hell are you doing here?"

Brian looked up curious, while Casey felt confused. Seldom before he had heard him so furious.

"Zeke? What's ..."

"Didn't you tell your Grandma that you just wanted to go to the market? She is waiting for you for hours now!"

Casey threw a look at his watch and he startled. In the meantime is was almost lunchtime. Zeke was right, he should have been at home again long time ago. No wonder that his Grandma was starting to worry - he was never that late.

"Oh shit! I haven't noticed that it's already that late, " he murmured. He threw an apologetic look to Brian.
"Sorry. I really think, I've to go now!"

"It's okay. But I could give you a ride home, if you want. It started to rain again!"

"This would be nice," said Casey.

"No, thanks," Zeke hissed, while he already reached for the shopping bags Casey had put down beside the table.

Brian shrugged.
"Really, it's not a big deal. My car is parking just around the corner. So ... "

Zeke turned around and sparkled at him furiously.
"Shut up, okay! We get along quite well without you. So, why don't you just scram it and don't bother Casey anymore? He already has to deal with so much shit. The last he needs, is a guy who is just kidding with him!"

Casey gasped loudly, while Brian looked at him slightly grinning. This grin made him even more furious.
"Better watch out. I'll tell you right here and now: if you're gonna hurt him, better run and hide. But I'll find you everywhere and then ...  do you get this?"

Casey swallowed.
"Zeke, what ...," he started.

Zeke glared at him.
"You ready? Can we get out of here now? But maybe you prefer to go with him in his fucking car!"

Casey watched him flouncing out of the diner. He felt unable to move. After a moment he dared to look at Brian.

"I'm so sorry," he murmured.

Brian's eyes sparkled while he shrugged.
"Why? You've done nothing at all!"

"I'm sure, he hasn't meant it that way! He ... he is not like that!"

"Don't worry, Casey, it's not that bad. It's quite amusing," Brian reassured him.
"Reminds me of myself and how I've been still a few years ago. I was such a hothead, before I met Ric. Zeke will still have to learn a lot. When he starts to realize that he can trust you, he won't need such behavior any longer."

Casey narrowed his eyes.
"What the hell do you know, " he snapped at him.
"You don't know anything about Zeke. Zeke trusts no one ... but he trusts me! He is my friend. And ... I know, he thinks, he must take care of me, because no one else does. He has already  protected me before, Brian, believe me, he has. And he ... "

Brian listened to Casey's emotional release in silence. A slightly amused smile brightened his face.

"What are you still doing here, eh?"

Casey broke off.
"Sorry! There was no reason to yell at you. Now you are furious with me too, right?"

"Naw, definitely not. But it is what you want, isn't it? You just want to follow him now!"

Casey shrugged.
"I don't know! I've never seen him like this before. But maybe ... maybe he needs me!"

"So, what are you waiting for? It's all right! See, I also hang around here a bit too long. Actually I should have gone back to the cottage some time ago. Time to pack my bags and for a last cleaning. Tomorrow I'm gonna go back to Cali! Back to Ric, y'know!"

Casey forced himself to smile.
"Well ... then ... if it's okay for you ... But it was nice to meet you again, really!"

"Same here. And, Casey ... keep your chin up. He'll calm down!"

"I hope so," Casey sighed.
"Sometimes is so hard to deal with him. When he shuts himself off, no one can reach him."

After a last short embrace and the promise to call Brian if he was in Frisco, both finally said Goodbye.

"Grandma?"

Casey entered the kitchen where his grandmother was just storing the shopping.

"I'm sorry, Grandma. But I've met an old friend, I haven't seen for nearly a year. We've lost track of time!"

She looked at him thoughtfully. There it was again, the mention of the "old friend".  Zeke had also told her about him, when he had put the shopping bags onto the table without saying a single word.

"Where is Casey," she had asked.

Zeke had shrugged.
"Don't worry, he's okay. He has met an old friend. They seem to have a lot shit to talk about ..."

Then he went upstairs to his room, the door was slammed a bit too loud. And now Casey ... and the mention of this "old friend" again. Casey had no "old friends" - he had always been alone until Zeke had crossed his way. She could feel his restlessness and she knew something had happened. But she didn't want to bother him with questions - he would talk to her, as soon as he was ready for it.

"Zeke ... is he already coming back?"

"Yes, a few minutes ago. He is upstairs, in his room!"

"Oh ... then ... if you don't need my help for lunch, then ... "

"No lunch today, Casey, it's too late. But I can make you a sandwich, if you're hungry," she said.

"No, thanks. Maybe later!"

His Grandma sighed and watched him going upstairs. It must be really bad. Normally Casey was always hungry.

Casey stopped in front of the guest-room, Zeke's room since a few weeks now, and he didn't dare to knock. No sound was to be heard. Unusual - whenever Zeke was in his room, music was playing. He was a real music freak. Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan - music he liked to hear whenever he was alone, whenever he wanted to rest his mind. Casey was never allowed to hear such music at home, but he had learned to love it during the last weeks, because Zeke had shared his music with him. As he had shared a lot with him ... but now ...

Casey hesitated. He didn't know what he should think, he didn't know what he wanted to say. He remembered about yesterday. Zeke, flirting, teasing, kissing ... This Zeke he wanted back. The Zeke from the diner, angry and loud, was so strange and nearly freaked him out. Finally he took a deep breath and knocked at the door.

"Come in!"

The answer came immediately, almost as if he had awaited him. When Casey stepped in the room, he stiffened in every movement. Zeke was just tossing his stuff into his two backpacks. He didn't even look up when Casey entered.
