Later in the evening Zeke was back on the porch again. Alone this time. Samantha was in bed now, Casey was with her to keep his promise and read to her. It already lasted for a while. Casey was good for her. The Conners were good for her. It was so obvious that this was what she needed. He himself? She had barely talked to him ... but he had felt her eyes resting on him often enough. He couldn't say if this was good or bad ...
A slight noise suddenly caught his interest. He checked the garden beside the porch and frowned. The almost invisible, small figure tried to hide behind a tree, but he did notice her yellow jams. Samantha!? He narrowed his eyes. She stood rooted on the spot and seemed to stare over to him. First he thought about it to call for Casey. But maybe this would scare her and she would run away. In the middle of the night. In a neighbourhood she didn't know. So he finally got up and approached her slowly.
"Hey," he said.
"What are you doing here? Does Casey know?"
She shook her head and looked at him defiant. It was hard not to laugh. He liked that she was so strong and seemed to know what she wanted. But she definitely shouldn't be here by now.
"Shouldn't you be in bed? Did you sneak out of the house?"
She shrugged and chewed at her lower lip.
"I just wanted to have a look at it," she murmured.
Zeke stared at her confused.
"Your car! It's a GTO, isn't it? My mom told me it is one."
For a moment Zeke wondered what else Kat might have told her. This was somehow unreal. He was talking with his five year old daughter about his GTO?! But at least it was easier than to talk about dolls or fairies.
"I bet it's fast," Samantha said.
"My mom said it is. She liked your car."
Zeke swallowed while remembering his wild days ... and nights ... together with Kat. They had preferred to drive at night and find a shabby motel to crash during the days. The roads were almost empty in the middle of the night and he could give full speed. How much Kat had liked this ... it gave her a feeling of freedom, she'd told him ... But he didn't feel able to talk with Samantha about her mom ... he just couldn't!
"Yeah, it's fast like a racing car," he tried to bring the subject back to something he felt safer about.
"Some years ago I even did some racing with it."
She smiled wide.
"Did you win?"
"Sure. It's the best car of the world."
She hesitated for a moment.
"But an Audi is great too. When I'm older I will buy one."
"An Audi, huh? Pretty cool car."
She nodded laughing.
"I want a blue one with white stripes. Like the one Santa Clause gave me last Christmas. It was great. You could even open the doors and the hood."
"So you like cars a lot, huh?"
"Cars are much more interesting than dolls. And astronauts. They are cool too. They fly to the moon."
Suddenly her face darkened and she looked unsure.
"Do you think they will go to hell for that?"
Zeke frowned confused at this sudden turn.
"No, of course not."
"My grandpa does," she said with a low voice.
"He got angry when he found my book about the moon and the stars. He says it's ... in...fernal stuff ... what does this mean?"
That he was a fucking stupid piece of shit. Zeke was seething with rage. But he knew better than to curse loud and tell her what he would love to do with him.
"He threw it into a garbage container. Together with most of my other things."
Her voice was trembling now. Zeke bent down and put an arm around her shoulder.
"Hey," he murmured.
"That was not okay. I think it's cool that you like cars and astronauts. It's nothing wrong with it."
In the next moment she had thrown her arms around him and sniffed slightly.
"He is mean," she sobbed.
"He says stuff about my mom ... and about you. I don't like him!"
Zeke cursed inwardly. His heart was his mouth. He wished Casey would be here. Or Mrs. C. They would know what to do now.
"Shshsh," he whispered.
All he could do was sit down onto the ground and pull her onto his lap. She felt warm and wet with tears, she was trembling und gasping for air. All he wanted was to hold her, to keep her safe and to make everything bad undo what had ever happened to her.
"It's okay. You don't ever have to see him again!"
She lifted her head and searched for his eyes.
Zeke nodded fast and reached for her hand.
"Pinky swear. You won't have to go anywhere if you don't want to. Never again!"
She sighed one last time and put her head back onto his shoulder. Zeke noticed how tired she looked and he realized what time it actually was. Slowly he got back onto his feet, with Samantha in his arms.
"I guess it's about time to bring you back to bed," he murmured.
"Not the bed," she protested weakly.
Zeke chuckled, feeling relieved and slightly amused at the same time.
"Tomorrow is time enough for that, okay?"
