- eighteen -

Later in the evening Zeke was back on the porch again. Alone this time. Samantha was in bed now, Casey was with her to keep his promise and read to her. It already lasted for a while. Casey was good for her. The Conners were good for her. It was so obvious that this was what she needed. He himself? She had barely talked to him ... but he had felt her eyes resting on him often enough. He couldn't say if this was good or bad ...

A slight noise suddenly caught his interest. He checked the garden beside the porch and frowned. The almost invisible, small figure tried to hide behind a tree, but he did notice her yellow jams. Samantha!? He narrowed his eyes. She stood rooted on the spot and seemed to stare over to him. First he thought about it to call for Casey. But maybe this would scare her and she would run away. In the middle of the night. In a neighbourhood she didn't know. So he finally got up and approached her slowly.

"Hey," he said.
"What are you doing here? Does Casey know?"

She shook her head and looked at him defiant. It was hard not to laugh. He liked that she was so strong and seemed to know what she wanted. But she definitely shouldn't be here by now.

"Shouldn't you be in bed? Did you sneak out of the house?"

She shrugged and chewed at her lower lip.
"I just wanted to have a look at it," she murmured.

"At what?"

"The GTO!"

Zeke stared at her confused.

"Your car! It's a GTO, isn't it? My mom told me it is one."

For a moment Zeke wondered what else Kat might have told her. This was somehow unreal. He was talking with his five year old daughter about his GTO?! But at least it was easier than to talk about dolls or fairies.

"I bet it's fast," Samantha said.
"My mom said it is. She liked your car."

Zeke swallowed while remembering his wild days ... and nights ... together with Kat. They had preferred to drive at night and find a shabby motel to crash during the days. The roads were almost empty in the middle of the night and he could give full speed. How much Kat had liked this ... it gave her a feeling of freedom, she'd told him ... But he didn't feel able to talk with Samantha about her mom ... he just couldn't!

"Yeah, it's fast like a racing car," he tried to bring the subject back to something he felt safer about.
"Some years ago I even did some racing with it."

She smiled wide.
"Did you win?"

"Sure. It's the best car of the world."

"I guess."
She hesitated for a moment.
"But an Audi is great too. When I'm older I will buy one."

"An Audi, huh? Pretty cool car."

She nodded laughing.
"I want a blue one with white stripes. Like the one Santa Clause gave me last Christmas. It was great. You could even open the doors and the hood."

Zeke grinned.
"So you like cars a lot, huh?"

She shrugged.
"Cars are much more interesting than dolls. And astronauts. They are cool too. They fly to the moon."
Suddenly her face darkened and she looked unsure.
"Do you think they will go to hell for that?"

Zeke frowned confused at this sudden turn.
"No, of course not."

"My grandpa does," she said with a low voice.
"He got angry when he found my book about the moon and the stars. He says it's ... in...fernal stuff ... what does this mean?"

That he was a fucking stupid piece of shit. Zeke was seething with rage. But he knew better than to curse loud and tell her what he would love to do with him.

"He threw it into a garbage container. Together with most of my other things."
Her voice was trembling now. Zeke bent down and put an arm around her shoulder.

"Hey," he murmured.
"That was not okay. I think it's cool that you like cars and astronauts. It's nothing wrong with it."

In the next moment she had thrown her arms around him and sniffed slightly.
"He is mean," she sobbed.
"He says stuff about my mom ... and about you. I don't like him!"

Zeke cursed inwardly. His heart was his mouth. He wished Casey would be here. Or Mrs. C. They would know what to do now.

"Shshsh," he whispered.

All he could do was sit down onto the ground and pull her onto his lap. She felt warm and wet with tears, she was trembling und gasping for air. All he wanted was to hold her, to keep her safe and to make everything bad undo what had ever happened to her.
"It's okay. You don't ever have to see him again!"

She lifted her head and searched for his eyes.
"Pinky swear?"

Zeke nodded fast and reached for her hand.
"Pinky swear. You won't have to go anywhere if you don't want to. Never again!"

She sighed one last time and put her head back onto his shoulder. Zeke noticed how tired she looked and he realized what time it actually was. Slowly he got back onto his feet, with Samantha in his arms.

"I guess it's about time to bring you back to bed," he murmured.

"Not the bed," she protested weakly.
"The GTO!"

"Sure thing."
Zeke chuckled, feeling relieved and slightly amused at the same time.
"Tomorrow is time enough for that, okay?"

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!! How cute is that? I love that Samantha likes cars and astronauts and that Zeke has something he can talk about with his daughter. Loved this, Prisca!

I really need to come back to all your wonderful comments. Samantha has a lot in common with her dad, I hope this will make it a bit easier for Zeke.

Thanks, as ever, for reading and commenting and everything you do for our Fandom. Zeke still needs to learn but Samantha makes it easy for him ... and everyone else. It# s hard not to like her.

Yay! Finally, a sweet, lovely moment between father and daughter. She's too good a kid, too smart to get Zeke riled. Maybe, lol. :) I hope it stays like this!

Oh you, always skeptical when the boys are happy. Samantha is a sunshine, how can Zeke fall in love with her? It is like it should be: Casey, Zeke, Samantha and the Conner's ... a great family ... this is what little Samantha needs now. ... Hm ...

I just knew they would bond! But not that it would be over cars. It makes perfect sense - a subject that Zeke feels on sure ground with. And the stories told by Kat have made this car a fairy tale for the little girl. She is comical but the things she says are full of sadness. I think that now Zeke can see a way to relate to her. She has her own kind of wisdom and instincts about people. She already trusts Zeke and there is so much he can give her just be being available in her life. Great chapter!

Thanks, as ever, for reading and all your wonderful comments. I'm glad you like this, I wanted to give them something that bounds them together. It makes things easier for Zeke.

Moar cuteness, omg. Cars and pinkie swears--this girl just rocks!
